Help/Building surveys

Survey settings

Most of these can be left alone. Two of them — display mode and randomisation — measurably change your results, so they are worth understanding.

The settings that change your data

  • Display modeAuto shows one question per page on mobile and grouped pages on desktop. One-per-page on mobile lifts completion by roughly 15–25% over a long scroll, so Auto is the right default for almost every survey.
  • Randomise question orderShows questions in a different order to each respondent, which cancels out order-of-presentation bias. Attention checks and questions you have pinned stay put, and questions involved in logic are kept in a workable order.
  • Randomise option orderSet per question. Shuffles the answer options so the first option does not accumulate an unearned advantage. Any “Other” option stays last.

The rest

  • Completion screenThe card respondents see after submitting. Customise the message, and it carries your branding.
  • Progress indicatorProgress bar by default. Turn it off for surveys where the length might put people off.
  • IncentiveTell respondents what they will earn. Shown on the survey and in panel summaries.
  • NotificationsEmail you when responses arrive.
  • Webhook on new responsePOST each response to Zapier, Make, n8n or any URL that accepts webhooks.
  • Response qualityAutomatic flagging of suspicious responses. Covered in its own guide.
Tip
Auto-advance

On one-question-per-page, tapping a single-select answer moves to the next question after a short pause, so respondents are not tapping an option and then a Next button. Turn it off if you would rather they confirm each answer explicitly.
